Course Overview

The use of disciplinary procedures is quite common in the UK, and estimates have suggested that between 3% and 5% of the working population receive some form of disciplinary sanction each year. This means around 50 disciplinary cases in an organisation of 1,000 employees.

Discipline is more about setting standards of behaviour and performance and letting staff know what those standards are. It is also about helping staff to achieve and maintain those standards by setting an example:

  • through training
  • through guidance
  • through communication

The aim of this course is to provide a practical insight into the handling of disciplinary and dismissal issues. We will show:

a)    how to avoid disciplinary problems in the first place;
b)    how to create disciplinary rules and disciplinary procedures;
c)    how to deal with disciplinary issues that do occur.
d)    when dismissal is, and when it is not, the best option.

By the end of this course you will feel both competent and confident in your mediation. It will allow you to:

  • understand the key benefits of knowing effective disciplinary procedures
  • have confidence when dealing with disciplinary matters
  • follow guidelines regarding disciplinary rules
  • prepare for disciplinary hearing
  • handle the grievance procedure
  • follow  a guide for carrying out an investigation

We will also take a close look at dismissal to ensure that employers act fairly and reasonably at all stages.
