The performance appraisal is one of the most important ways an organisation can ensure the continued ‘best performance’ practices from its employees and promote their future development. This course concentrates on the appraisal interview and highlights the importance of good interview techniques.

The focus of the training is to develop manager’s appraisal skills, maximise on current strengths and develop/share good working practices. Each delegate will receive a workbook that contains all course materials and exercises. The course will be based around the agreed structure of your organisations appraisal process and role-plays will based on ‘real situations’.

Welcome, introductions, aims and objectives

  • Setting clear and realistic objectives
    • Understanding SMART objectives
    • Writing up appraisal objectives using SMART as a basis for effective actions
  • Completing the appraisal form
    • Making concise and constructive comments that
    • Techniques that allow effective follow-up
  • How to avoid appraisal pitfalls
    • Discussing poor performance positively and professionally
    • Dealing with non-responsive appraisees
    • Dealing with argumentative and aggressive appraisees
  • Course close and paperwork

Proposed methods of training will include:

  • Role-play (using video/audio feedback depending on group size).
  • Video scenarios with discussion.
  • Group discussion.
  • Examining various problem solving techniques
  • Workgroups using course manual

All delegates will receive a workbook that doubles as an excellent post course reference manual.
